Effect of Pad and Disc Materials on the Behaviour of Disc Brake against Fluctuating Loading Conditions

Abstract

Disc brake in an automobile plays an important role to control the vehicle during running condition. Recently, asbestos, which is widely used disc brake material is recognised as a carcinogenic material by world health organisation and has been banned throughout the world to eliminate the diseases caused by asbestos material. Therefore, people are looking towards suitable alternatives to replace asbestos with other alternative materials. In this work, an attempt is made to check the performance of the brake by altering the materials of the disc and pad of the braking system, which are supposed to be major components of the brake. The behaviour of the disc brake pad assembly is studied under fluctuating loads for moderate speed conditions. The results are compared with the experimental results available in literature, and the best combination of materials for disc and pad is suggested for the design related to moderate speed conditions of the automobile.
