Engineering Education Reformation for Sustainable Development and Optimal Civil Engineering Practice in Nigeria
Abstract
Engineering education needs strategic approach and holistic reformation for sustainable development and optimal engineering practice in Nigeria. This study looks into educational reformation in Nigeria with special focus on civil engineering education and practice. The methodology adopted includes investigation on current trends of lecture delivery and quality of graduates from engineering institutions. Literatures were also checked for secondary data and general background of civil engineering training. Strategies for engineering education such as outcome based education with maximum involvement of industries. Periodical Curriculum review and workable government policies were highlighted. It has been concluded that reformation is highly necessary for optimal civil engineering performance and better professional output in construction, consultancy and government parastatals in Nigeria. There is need for appropriate policies, procurement of essential equipment for laboratories, curriculum review, and improvement in teaching and learning methods and strategies for implementation, sustainable development and optimal engineering practice in Nigeria.
