Adoption Of National Building Code Tenets:A Panacea To Incessant Building Collapse

Abstract


The menace of building collapses in Nigeria has increased tremendously which has been as the result of structural defects and use of incompetence, poor supervision/ workmanship. This study examines the adoption of the National Building code provisions as a panacea to the menace, considered its need and effects on building production performance. The required data for the work was gotten through the use of questionnaire administered to the professionals in the building industry. The study revealed that Incessant collapse of buildings, structural factures, fire inferno, built environment abuse and others and Increase in estimated cost of construction among other identified factors were factors responsible for needs to adopt building codes. It was also gathered that compliance with national building code spells out clearly the responsibilities of professional involved. It concluded that If all the tenets of the code is strictly enforced and adhered to by individual stakeholders in building professionals and building owners alike, the cases of incessant building collapses will be totally put to an end across the country. It was recommended there should be proper enlightenment for all construction stakeholders and the general public at large by the government at all levels on the needs for adoption of National Building Codes and also, that the planning authorities should make it mandatory for building owners/developers to submit the names of professional employed with their building plans for proper verification.
