Abstract

Soil contamination by engine oil basically occurs due to spills and leaks. It is common near highways, petrol pumps, workshops, off shore petroleum productions etc. The change in geotechnical properties of soil due to engine oil contamination may cause serious problems like cracking and settlement of structures. The paper aims at reviewing the works of researchers on the effect of engine oil contamination on the various geotechnical properties of soil. Soil stabilization method using lime and cement as a remediation method of contaminated soil is also examined in this paper. Geotechnical parameters investigated include consistency limits, shear parameters, maximum dry density, optimum moisture content, permeability and compressibility.
