Comparison of Hazard Potential of LPG Handling Units in GCU using Consequence Analysis

G Madhu, N Venkatesh, N Manoj

Abstract

The scope of this work was to quantitatively assess the risks involved in a section of a chemical process plant where LPG is produced using various consequence analysis models. The Gas Concentration Unit (GCU) was considered for the analysis as it produces a major portion of the LPG in a Petroleum Refinery. The Debutanizer, Stripper and HP (high pressure) Receiver, the three units which handle LPG, were considered for consequence analysis. The models used for this comparison were discharge rate models, dispersion models, TNT equivalence models for Vapor cloud explosion, BLEVE/Fireball models, pool fire and jet fire models. The parameters calculated under each model were compared to determine which unit possessed the highest hazard degree. The debutanizer was found to carry the highest degree of hazard.
