Evaluation of Critical Crack Position on the Curved Surface under Mechanical Load: FEA Approach

Mahantesh Matur, V. Krishnan, P. Dinesh

Abstract

Abstract: Influence of initial crack position on the stress distribution around the crack tip is always taken into account for the failure analysis of metallic structures. Evaluation of Stress Intensity Factor for cracks of various orientations was carried out using Finite Element Analysis technique. These Stress Intensity Factors were used to calculate energy release rate for the various orientations. Next, thus obtained energy values have been compared with energy values obtained analytically (Maximum tangential criteria). This study highlighted, that the crack orientation nearly perpendicular to the direction of loading gave the maximum values for energy release rate and is independent of material properties.

Keywords—Stress Intensity Factor, Crack position, Energy release rate, Finite element analysis.
