The Energization Transients of 6-Pulse Rectifier Circuits

Mohamed Mostafa Saied

Abstract

This paper addresses the energization transients of 6-pulse rectifier circuits. It applies an
efficient representation of the diodes in order to describe their performance in both the
forward and reverse directions. Without any loss of generality, the suggested method is
applied to the classical un-controlled six-valve full-wave rectifier bridge configuration. The
effect of the load resistance, the eventual presence of smoothing shunt-capacitors and series
inductors as well as the waveform of the supply voltage is illustrated. The approach can

handle cases involving unsymmetrical AC sources as well as the presence of batteries or non-
linear elements in the DC load circuits. The obtained results of a Mathematica code include

the currents and voltages of all circuit elements. The paper reports on a detailed investigation
involving seven case studies.
