Reactive Power Optimization using Particle Swarm Optimization with Time Varying-Acceleration Coefficient

Patel Nilesh Kantilal, Aarju R. Joshi

Abstract

This paper presents an approach for the solution of reactive power optimization problem. In deregulated power system operations, reactive power optimization helps the system operator to maintain system security with the economy. The application of the time-varying acceleration constant-particle swarm optimization (TVAC-PSO) method for the solution of this problem is emphasized. The real power losses of the system are minimized satisfying power balance, generator reactive power operating limit and voltage limits at each bus. This is achieved by optimally adjusting the generator voltages, transformer tap positions and switching compensating devices. The developed algorithm for TVAC-PSO is implemented on IEEE-39 bus New England test system. The results demonstrate the reduction in real and reactive power losses along with improvement in shunt charging and system voltage profile.
