Analytical influence of soil-structure-interaction on structural performance by using ETABS

Abstract

Soil conditions have a great deal to do with damage to structures during earthquakes. Hence the study on the energy transfer mechanism from soils to buildings during earthquakes is critical for the seismic design of multi-story buildings and for upgrading existing structures. Thus, the need for research into soil–structure interaction (SSI) problems is greater than ever. Moreover, recent studies show that the effects of SSI may be detrimental to the seismic response of structure and neglecting SSI in analysis may lead to un-conservative design.[6] Despite this, the conventional design procedure usually involves assumption of fixity at the base of foundation neglecting the flexibility of the foundation, the compressibility of the underneath soil and, consequently, the effect of foundation settlement on further redistribution of bending moment and shear force demands. The behavior of Structure when rested upon various types of soil such as Hard rock, rock, very dense soil, stiff soil and soft clay is studied in this paper. Four structural systems are used for modelling and analysis such as regular building, braced, commercial, and shear wall. The effect of soil-structure interaction is also considered during the modelling. Earthquake Time history data for Sylmarff and Altadena was considered for the dynamic analysis. Results for the models were obtained and interpreted in required format. To determine the behavior of soil under different conditions the use of ETABS 2016 software has been made.
