Experimental Study on Effectiveness of TMD in Reducing Torsional Motion under Harmonic Base Motion

Abstract

Abstract

Asymmetry in the building could arise due to unsymmetrical distribution of mass, stiffness, damping and/or strength characteristics. The earthquake response of asymmetric buildings is characterized by coupling between translational and rotational degrees of freedom (dofs). This paper includes an experimental analysis of one storied asymmetrical building frame subjected to harmonic motion with and without tuned mass damper (TMD). Experimentation is done on a shake table and readings were recorded. The time history and displacements of bare frame were recorded and compared with the frames having tuned mass damper to examine the effectiveness of TMD for leading towards response.
