Groundwater Investigation Using Remote Sensing and GIS in Hard Rock Terrain

Vetriselvi Karuppaiah

Abstract

A large amount of rainwater is lost through run off, In order to ensure a judicious use of groundwater proper evaluation is required. In the present study, an integrated Remote Sensing and GIS based methodology was developed for the investigation of groundwater and selection of artificial recharge sites in a hard rock terrain. Main objectives of these studies are delineation of groundwater potential zones in the area, carry out trend analysis for groundwater level fluctuation and identification suitable sites for artificial recharge to augment groundwater recharge in the area. The results indicate that in most of the wells the water levels shows declining trend. By superimposing the drainage network map, lineament map and rise in water level map over the potential zone map, and also considering the terrain conditions for artificial recharge, suitable sites for replenishing groundwater in the study area were identified.
