Assessment of Major Ion Chemistry in Ground Water and Surface Water of Kailana Lake Area of Jodhpur (Rajasthan)

Leela Kaur

Abstract

The aim of the present study was the assessment of the major ion chemistry of ground water and surface water of Kailana lake area, Jodhpur (Rajasthan). Various parameters of water quality were analyzed such as pH, electric conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), bicarbonate, silca, phosphate, sulphate, chloride, fluoride, sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and heavy metals (copper, lead, manganese, nickel and zinc). Piper diagram for ground water during pre-monsoon and monsoon showed Ca+2-HCO3- and Na++K+-Clenrichment whereas during post-monsoon it showed 50% Na++K+ and 50% Ca+2 and also 50% CO3-2+HCO3 and 50% Cl rich. Manganese in ground water exceeded the permissible limit which is 0.5 mg/l and total dissolved solids also exceeded the permissible limit which is 500 mg/l. The ground water quality (deep wells) indicates it is not suitable for drinking purpose which may be due to anthropogenic activities like sewage effluents.
