Comparative study of various castellated beams with and without stiffeners

Abstract


use of the castellated beams has its own benefits as its reasonable gives additional strength by almost the same amount of material easily erectable. Studies associated with them demonstrate that quantifiable reduction in the weight of the structure is accomplished by allowing web openings without reducing structural strength or necessities of serviceability. They are made-up by cutting I section in the zigzag design to make shapes like circular hexagonal rectangular and re-joining it by welding both the parts together and increasing its depth ultimately leading to increase its strength. So the strength of I section is improved with the same quantity of material which was necessary for the parent I section. Several types of failure are known, the failure by either the creation of a flexural mechanism by lateral torsion buckling vertical shear failure and formation of vierendeel mechanism shear buckling of a web post and by rupture of welded joints. Based on the various mode of failure the applicable methods of analysis are studied which includes plastic analysis mid post yielding and buckling analysis. Using software like ABAQUS MSc/Nastran and ansus14. Study indicates that use of stiffener in the welded portion decreases the failure as well as increase the strength of the beam
