Educational Research Review on the Engineering of Droplet based Microfluidics

Subhadeep Mukhopadhyay

Abstract

Abstract
Droplet based microfluidics as a subject is interdisciplinary among materials science, biochemistry and microengineering, having the wide range of applications from advanced materials to biomedical sciences. Control on droplet volumes and manipulation result into coalescence, mixing and sorting for chemical reactions inside droplets under specific experimental conditions. Surface properties and geometry of the fluidic microchannels are the important factors of droplet generation. This comprehensive review on droplet based microfluidics is helpful for the proposed elective-course on microfluidics (M.Tech, Theory) in Mechanical Engineering at the National Institute of Technology Arunachal Pradesh, under the Ministry of Human Resource Development (Government of India). This review paper is considered as the study-material for this proposed elective-course.

Keywords: Droplet, formation, manipulation, sorting, coalescence, splitting, mixing
