A Review on Magnetorheological Fluids and its Stabilization Techniques

Binto K Bino, Manish John Monachan

Abstract

Abstract

Magnetorheological fluids are fluids which can alter its physical and rheological properties in response to an external magnetic field. They find many applications in shock absorbers, semi-active dampers, clutches, brakes, haptic actuators and devices. The rheological properties of these fluids can be altered using additives in the fluid composition and hence, the limitations due to settling tendency can be reduced to an extent. Hence, a detailed study on stabilization of magnetorheological fluids is done, also covering composition and rheology by focusing on experimental synthesis and stabilization of MR Fluids in this paper.

Keywords: additives, anti-sedimentation properties, magnetorheological effect, magnetorheological fluids, stabilization, yield stress
