Scope of ITS in Exaggerating Existing Traffic Systems in India

Abstract

India is the largest democracy of world. Its current population is 1.3 billion and the land area of 3.1 million square km. Increasing population and urbanization in India increases the demand of vehicles, which leads to a critical burden on our existing traffic management system. One of the key issues for smart cities is to apply more sustainable and eco-friendly solutions to overcome the existing traffic congestion and environmental pollution level respectively. Along with this the increase in magnitude and frequency of loading of commercial vehicles has posed an overburden on existing road networks. Currently all the measures to control traffic are operated manually, and thus not assisting the vehicle in real time. Intelligent transportation system (ITS) provides live feeds through the equipment installed on the road side. This paper discusses the components of ITS which include data acquisition, data analysis, traveler information etc. Communication techniques like Global Positioning System (GPS), Wi-Fi, microphone, camera, gyroscope, etc. which can be used in ITS by using various sensors of the smartphone. ITS applications and policy measures in Indian context are discussed through examples. This paper also discusses on the challenges in implementation of ITS in India due to the present heterogeneous traffic conditions.
