Design and Analysis of of Fins for Air Cooled Engine by Varying its Geometry & Material - A Review

Umesh Vora

Abstract

Fins are mechanical structures which are used to cool various structures via the process of convection to facilitate this, fins are provided on the outer surface of the cylinder. The cooling fins allow the wind to move the heat away from the engine. For fins, material like aluminium alloy is widely used. In most of cases simple fins geometry is preferred such as rectangular fins. . The heat transfer rate depends upon the velocity of the vehicle, fin geometry and the ambient temperature. . Low rate of heat transfer through fins is the main problem of air cooling system. Insufficient removal of heat from engine will lead to high thermal stresses.  Engine life and effectiveness of fins can be improved with effective cooling. This review paper gives an overview on mode of heat transfer and various geometry of fin.
