Abstract

Abstract

Fiber Wireless (FiWi) access networks prove themselves as promising broadband access networks.  These networks enable users to access services in “Anywhere-Anytime” fashion. FiWi networks offer higher bandwidth and better flexibility at much lower price than passive optical network. As FiWi supports high data rate (typically about Gigabits per second), any failure may results in huge data loss. Therefore, to protect such loss of data, we need to design a more survival network. The failures in FiWi may occur due to front-end and back-end malfunction. These failures may be classified into two categories viz. Intra segment failures and Inter segment failures. Intra segment failures occur mainly because of optical network unit (ONU) failure and Inter segment failures occur due to failure of optical line terminal (OLT). Most of the work reported so far, provides solution to overcome either Inter segment failures or Intra segment failures. Few algorithms deal with both types of failures but they exhibit higher blocking probability. In this paper we propose an effective solution which can handle both types of failures with reduced blocking probability. The proposed solution works in two stages (1) Deployment of survivable cost efficient FiWi segments (2) Identification of backup ONUs and deployment of backup fibers among different segments of FiWi network. The second stage of the scheme offers multi way protection which helps to reduce the overall blocking probability of the network. Simulation results show that proposed work offers a complete solution for cost efficient survivable FiWi networks.
