Reliability Modeling, Performance and Cost-Benefit Analysis of Optical Fiber Network in DCRUST

Puja Rani, Manoj Duhan

Abstract

Abstract

This paper includes the survey of optical fiber network in DCRUST and its reliability modeling aspects to evaluate reliability of that optical fiber network. Model in this paper has an operative unit which is optical fiber cable and a hotstandby unit which is an optical fiber ring provided as a redundant fiber in DCRUST. This protection path is necessary in optical fiber to reduce the wastage of time and to continue the data transmission even after the failure of working path. If operative unit fails, signal is transmitted and received through hotstandby unit and in the mean time failed unit is repaired by repairman. A real time optical fiber network installed at DCRUST is considered in this paper with real values of parameters related to system. In this paper, a study is also carried out to calculate and analyze various measures of system effectiveness, and different reliability parameters of system. Profit is also evaluated and plotted graphically.

Keywords: Reliability, optical fiber cable (OFC), availability, Markov model process, mean time to system failure (MTSF), Deenbandhu Chhotu Ram University of Science and Technology (DCRUST), cumulative density/distribution funtion (cdf)
