Effect of vehicle composition on signalized intersection capacity

Anjali Suresh Langade, Sushmitha Ramireddy, KVR Ravishankar

Abstract

For the design of signalized intersections, capacity is the most critical parameter used. Proper capacity assessment plays an important role in deciding the degree of operation. In order to estimate capacity, the saturation flow rate must be assessed by considering the parameters affected. The main objective of the present study is to identify the impact of the composition of the vehicle and the effect of the time taken to cross the intersection on the mixed traffic condition of the signalized intersection. To carry out this study, 4 Signalized intersections were selected from Warangal City and Nagpur City in India. INDO HCM method was adopted for this study. Saturation flow related to the 30 cycles data were considered to carry out this study. Time taken by the vehicles to cross the intersections is determined in the identified peak hour and its relation with capacity was determined. From the present study, it is observed that the time taken by vehicles is nearly 7 to 9 sec to cross the intersection. As the time required increases then the capacity of intersection decreases.

Keywords: Saturation flow rate, vehicle composition, capacity, mixed traffic condition, signalized intersections.
