Reduction of Pollutant for SI Engine Using Argon and Oxy-hydrogen

N. Bose, V. Kamal Raj

Abstract

Reducing the emission associated with oil combustion is gaining increasing interest worldwide. Due to their dangerous effects on human health, vegetation and climate, various pre-combustion, in-cylinder and post combustion techniques have been tried for their abatement. The combustion of a hydrocarbon fuel with air produces mainly carbon dioxide(CO2) and Water(H2O). However, internal combustion engines are not perfectly efficient, so some of the fuel is not burned, which results in the presence of hydrocarbons (HCs) other organic compounds, carbon monoxide(CO) and forming mainly nitric oxide (NO). In this project, oxy-hydrogen gas has been introduced as an alternative clean source of energy. The results show that a mixture of HHO, air, and fuel cause a reduction in the concentration of pollutant constituents except NOx and an enhancement in engine efficiency. The argon inert gas is used to dilute the intake air of a spark ignition engine to decrease nitrogen oxides and due to insufficient oxygen, carbon monoxide (CO) increases. The project reviews all workable measures taken so far to controlling the combustion generated emissions from 4-stroke spark ignition and compression ignition vehicular engines. As a result, system of oxy-hydrogen and argon cylinder is made into single system which is made to inject into the engine. This integration helps to minimize the drawbacks of both systems, which was evolved when it is used individually. Result of the project infers that reduction in emission of pollutant is achieved.
