Innermost Surface Temperature Characteristics of Solar Photovoltaic Double Pane Window

Sankar Barman, Hirak Ranjan Das

Abstract

A window has a great role in the thermal comfort and HVAC load of a building. The role of a window in the HVAC load further increases in a location where both the summer and winter conditions are severe. In the above context, the innermost surface of a double pane window system is the most important. The present paper presents an analysis of the temperature characteristics of the innermost surface of a double pane STPV integrated window system. For the analysis, four window configurations have been studied under three different modes of air ventilation strategies. The temperature of the
innermost surface of the considered window configurations has also been analyzed under the nonventilation condition. The whole building simulation software EnrgyPlus has been used in the study.
The analysis showed that depending upon the window configuration and airflow strategy, the innermost surface temperature of the double-pane STPV window can be altered in the summer and winter seasons.
It has been found in the analysis that the heat captured in the solar PV modules can be used to enhance thermal comfort in a building. For the above purpose, the appropriate combination of the window
system and airflow strategies are needed to be selected.
