Analysis of shading and energy generation by PV overhang using different models

Netrasikha Sonowal, Sankar Barman, Hirak Ranjan Das

Abstract

This paper presents the shading and energy generated by photovoltaic integrated overhangs in a building. The air temperature is greatly raised by sunlight entering through glass facades and windows that are not shaded. The overhang decreases the sunlit area of the windows thus decreasing the inside room temperature which decreases the requirement of cooling the rooms. The energy production by the photovoltaic modules has been calculated using three popular energy models namely the simple model, the equivalent one-diode model, and the Sandia model. The study has been carried out using EnrgyPlus simulation software. The comparative study shows that energy production is different among the energy models considered. The energy generation and shading also differ with orientations, time, and days of the year. In the south orientation, the overhang produces 98 Kwatt/m2 energy per annum as per the Sandia model.
