Frozen Waves: Double T-Shape Patch Antenna Sensor for Precise Ice and Snow Measurement

N. V. Maheswara Rao, P. Aruna Kumari

Abstract

To design a Micro strip patch antenna with double T shaped slots at operating frequency 2.4GHz was developed for ice detection and measurement application. Detection was performed by monitoring the resonance frequency and amplitude of the transmission coefficient between the antenna sensor and a broadband receiver. The patch antenna sensor is also capable of distinguishing between ice and water, respectively when compared to the bare sensor. The antenna was also capable of measuring ice thickness. In comparison to other current antennas, the suggested antenna is designed to achieve improved return loss (S11), VSWR, and gain. The micro strip patch antenna proved helpful due to its planar design, controlled radiation arrangement, sufficient gain, and periodic
characteristic in its reflection and transmission coefficient. Additionally, the large concentration of E-fields on the margins of this antenna design boosts detection sensitivity. For different parametric variations the antenna has been simulated in High Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS) ANSYS software. The antenna was also capable of measuring ice thickness. In comparison to other current antennas, the suggested antenna is designed to achieve improved return loss (S11), VSWR, and gain. Because of its planar design, directed radiation pattern, enough gain, and resonant characteristic in its transmission and reflection coefficient, the micro strip patch antenna proved useful. Additionally, the large concentration of E-fields on the margins of this antenna design boosts detection
sensitivity.
