

Drilling Effect on Fiber Composites: A Review
Abstract
Composites laminates show immense mechanical properties like strength-to-weight ratio, damage tolerance, fatigue and corrosion resistance therefore conventional materials are replaced by composites in many areas such as automobile and aircraft structure. Machining of composites is very difficult than machining of a conventional material because composites are inhomogeneous and extremely abrasive. In production drilling is important machining process used to produce hole for riveted and bolted joint. There are many improvements seen to reduce the drilling induced problems in composites. Such advancement will be profited by a comprehensive literature review of drilling attained on composites. This paper presents a literature review on mechanical drilling processes for glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP) and carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) composites. It discusses tool wear, axial force, cutting temperature, tool life and delamination when drilling of composites.
