Abstract

It is essential to search for an efficient and innovative solution to protect the environment by reducing the carbon footprint. There is an urgent need to discourage use of ineffective and inefficient traditional power sources. We need to implement an innovative, economically efficient and intelligent smart city
lighting system to solve some of the existing social, economic and environmental problem under the smart city project. In the present paper a prototype model has been developed using internet of things (IoT) as smart technology to reduce consumption of electricity that ultimately will reduce the carbon footprint and will also bring automation in switching of the lights in order to reduce human interventions. The main purpose of the project is to reduce the wastage of electricity and to automate street lighting systems. Because the existing models of street lights need manpower to switch on and off, street lights are turned on before the darkness and turned off around the middle of the day or late morning. Implementation of this project will reduce electricity consumption, which is a major issue currently all over the world as natural resources are getting exhausted and as we are in search for alternatives to natural resources.
