Kill Corruption and Build Construction: A Review of Corrupt Practices

Abstract


Over the years, construction projects are perpetually described as complex in both nature and management which suggest possibilities of being significantly characterized by corrupt policies and procedures resulting into monumental wastages. Prevailing challenges in the sector reveal that both the client representatives and the contractors compromised at every level of a well-defined project. Activities in certain cultural circles, which might be regarded as essential for getting the job done, and a lawful means of doing so, may well be seen elsewhere as dishonest, or unlawful. The nature of construction activities demands is however complex, but its complexity is mostly simulated into huge financial fraud by project parties even at the detriment of well conceived project. This paper is aimed at showcasing reviewed corrupt practices prevalent in the construction sub sector and the menace associated with this negative trend on contracted projects to the public. It further attempts to establish the existence of corruption, its outcomes and measures to control the high rate of the unethical practices. The paper findings will create the needed awareness in mindset of the public on the existence and the menace of corruption on construction projects, the stakeholders and client on measures to procure and manage construction projects to boast socio-economical need of the nation.
