Due to significant similarities, a hydraulic press can be converted to vertical push down broaching machine with a few modifications. A leading agricultural machinery manufacturer in India is selected for the study. Company produces power tiller, power reaper, garden tiller, mini tractor etc. from its four plants. This paper deals with a problem of periodically increasing machining cost of fuel cam of tiller (currently 7 Rs/cam). Due to the absence of a broaching machine, the slotting operation is to be done at an outside firm. A solution to convert an unused 4 T hydraulic press into a vertical push down type broaching machine is suggested. The technical and economic feasibility are ensured. Breakeven analysis is used to find out the starting point of profit in terms of job units. Solid edge graphic software package is also utilized for the study.
