Exploring the Path to Strategic Investment: An In-Depth SWOT Analysis of Renewable Energy in Afghanistan

Azatullah Zaheer, Abdullah ., Muhammad Tariq

Abstract

This study employs SWOT analysis to assess Afghanistan's renewable energy (RE) sector, crucial for achieving its 2030 vision and Paris Agreement commitments. Strengths include RE potential, power sector reform, feed-in tariffs, and donor support. Weaknesses involve security, technical, commercial, and financing hurdles. Opportunities stem from rising energy demand,
climate awareness, and decreasing RE costs, while threats include power import reliance, low cost recovery, and policy instability. To attract sustainable foreign direct investment (FDI), enhancing security, technical capacity, policy clarity, and funding is imperative, especially within the Taliban-controlled context, which presents unique challenges and local industry potential. Policy support, feed-in tariffs, and partnerships play pivotal roles. Integrating RE, improving rural energy access, reducing imports, and fostering regional cooperation contribute to sustainable development. Initiatives like the ASERD program offer prospects for human development, poverty alleviation, and environmental conservation. Regional energy cooperation strategically positions Afghanistan. Innovation, research, and education cultivate a skilled workforce, yet political instability, security risks, economic challenges, and low public awareness pose threats. Collaborative efforts, innovation, and strategic navigation are vital for Afghanistan's sustainable development.
