Abstract

Abstract

The injection moulding process is the most widely used method of manufacturing Engineering thermoplastics. Thermoplastic blends and composites are suitably replacing metals and ceramics in most circumstances. This trend is mainly due to the versatility and compatibility of the injection moulding process. However, the injection moulding conditions has a significant impact on the aesthetic and functional characteristics of the final product as the flow induces substantial variation in the properties of individual polymer chains from one point to another. Thus, proper conditions have to be set in order to obtain good quality injection moulded part. Numerical simulation methodologies are developed to model the thermoplastic injection moulding process and the effect of the injection moulding conditions on the properties of the part can be studied. It can be used to obtain a range of operating conditions within which the quality considerations are met. This study employs Moldflow to simulate thermoplastic injection moulding process. The material chosen is Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) thermoplastic. The study aims to find the effect of injection moulding conditions on the tensile properties and obtain an optimised condition wherein the tensile properties of ABS thermoplastic are maximised without any loss in the quality.
