STUDIES ON MECHANICAL, OPTICAL AND BARRIER PROPERTIES OF LOW DENSITY POLY ETHYLENE WITH MICRO CLAY
Keywords:
LDPE, Micro clay, Twin screw compounding, Extrusion, Mechanical, Optical and Barrier PropertiesAbstract
LDPE (Low density Poly ethylene) was melt blended with micro clay (0.5, 1, 3 & 5 wt%) by using a twin screw compounding extruder. Tubular blown film was taken using a tubular blown film extruder. Mechanical, optical and barrier properties were evaluated. The following trend was observed as the micro clay concentration was increased: The tensile strength was increased by 18% in machine direction (M/D) and decreased by 36% in transverse direction (T/D). The Elongation at break was lowered in both Machine and transverse directions. The tear strength was increased by 158 and 50% in M/D and T/D respectively. Dart impact strength was increased by about 95%. MFI decreased and density increased. WVTR decreased by 90% and oxygen gas permeability 80% decreased. Haze increased by 20% and clarity slightly decreased by 2%.
