Utilization of Sugarcane Bagasse as Biopolymer Adsorbent for Arsenic (III) Removal from Aqueous Solutions

Abstract


The present study focuses on the removal of the heavy metal As(III) from aqueous solutions using the low cost adsorbent, sugarcane bagasse. The effect of contact time (10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 min), adsorbent dosage (0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1 gm) and metal concentrations (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 ppm) on the adsorption were studied and the optimum conditions were found. FTIR was used for the analysis of the adsorbent. FTIR analysis showed effective removal or adsorption of As(III). % removal of As(III) is approximately 95%. Sugarcane bagasse has proved to be a cheap and environment friendly adsorbent that worked efficiently in the As(III) removal.
