Synthesis and Characterization of Al-Mg-Si Alloy based Hybrid Composite Reinforced with SiC and Graphite

Abstract


The present work is carried out to investigate the mechanical properties of Al-Mg-Si alloy matrix based hybrid metal matrix composites (MMCs) using stir casting method owing to its popularity and large scale productions. SiC and graphite reinforcements were added each with 1%, 2%, 3% and 4% respectively to fabricate four composites specimens. X-ray diffractometer and scanning electron microscope were used for phase identification and microstructure characterization (SEM). Density, hardness, compressive strength, and wear rates were investigated for mechanical characterizations. The percentage of reinforcement present in the MMCs was discovered to be a factor in the mechanical characteristics of the manufactured hybrid composites. XRD revealed that reinforcements were duly present in the composites and no intermediate phases were observed. SEM indicated that the dispersion of reinforcement particles is uniform in the matrix and EDS mapping indicated that the reinforcements were embedded in the matrix. Density of the composite materials was found to decrease, hardness and compressive strength increases with an increase in reinforcement concentration showing improved wear resistance.
