A Method for Power System Reliability Enhancement Considering Optimal Transmission Switching and Dynamic Line Thermal Rating

In the power industry, the focus has been almost exclusively on implementing equipment that can keep the power system reliable. With the growth of renewable energy, resource integration, system load uncertainties, and volatile weather conditions, electric utilities are faced with an increasingly complex and uncertain operating environment. Utilities are in need of a series of cost-effective technologies which allow them to operate power systems more economically and reliably. Due to the huge investment needed to build new power delivery facilities, cost-effective solutions such as new operational strategies are becoming more attractive in the recent years. This paper aims to study the use of optimal transmission switching (OTS) and dynamic thermal rating (DTR) as a potential solution to improve the power system reliability. Simulations are conducted on a modified reliability test system (MRTS) using MATLAB and CPLEX. The results have demonstrated great enhancements in service reliability when both OTS and DTR are realized.
