Control of a Grid-Connected Variable Speed Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator Based Wind Power Generation System

Variable speed wind turbines are more efficient compared to their fixed speed counterparts since maximum power is extracted over a wide range of wind speeds. In this work a grid-connected wind power generation system is modeled and implemented in Matlab/Simulink using a permanent magnet synchronous generator. A back to back space vector pulse width modulated voltage source converter converts the variable frequency generator currents and voltages into DC, then back to fixed frequency currents and voltages suitable for grid integration. The grid is operated at unity power factor and its active and reactive powers are both controlled.
