The Role of SCADA in Detecting Electric Faults in the Wind Turbine System: A Review

Abstract


A wind turbine is a machine which utilizes the kinetic energy of air to convert it into rotational energy. To generate the electricity, this rotational energy is transferred to the generator shaft. Whenever a fault occurs in the wind energy system, it decreases the system efficiency. During such abnormal conditions in a wind turbine system, the faults are detected through manual and/or automated system namely, SCADA. The control functions of SCADA are continuous monitoring of the devices, data collection, control & indication, alarm function, protection to devices in the wind farm. The paper discusses the inference over the works of various authors in utilizing SCADA as a base tool for electric fault detection in wind turbine system.
