SYNTHESIS OF LOCAL OIL-BASED MUD FOR NIGER DELTA WELLS USING ELAEIS GUINEENSIS
Abstract
Abstract
Edible oil is produced from palm kernel (Elaeis Guineensis), a widespread tropical fruit that has a specific gravity of approximately 0.9°C, a flash point of 242°C, a flash point of 251°C, and a pour point of 22°C. This experiment was conducted by replacing liquid paraffin oil, a known component of conventional oil-based mud, with palm kernel oil (PKO) in the synthesis of a new oil-based mud from local materials. The effectiveness of palm kernel oil-based mud as a drilling mud was investigated and compared with existing conventional oil-based mud. The results show that palm kernel oil-based mud has a very high viscosity than conventional oil-based mud, which reduces palm kernel oil-based mobility. To reduce the viscosity of the synthesized palm kernel oil-based mud, 24 ml of sodium ethoxide organic salt was added to 280 ml of palm kernel oil-based mud. The result showed that palm kernel oil (Elaeis Guineensis oil) can be used in the preparation of oil-based mud
