State of Heritage Structure in Dwarka City: Evaluation with Tourism Perspective

Abstract


Heritage distinguishes a location and guarantees a memorable experience based on the destination’s existing distinctive traits. Promoting heritage and focusing on the preservation of local cultural heritage as assets for heritage tourism development. When it comes to gaining a competitive edge in the tourist business, heritage tourism has emerged as a significant economic instrument as well as a marketing tool. Heritage promoted in tourism promises a wholesome experience to the visitors and, hence, enhances the value of the destination. The fundamental aim of this study is to evaluate the current state of heritage structures in Dwarka city and also understand their significance from the tourism perspective. In this study significance of the structure is defined in four broad categories as Historic, Architectural, Socio-cultural and Religious. The research is based on primary data collected through observations and secondary sources. The study analyses the existing condition of the 36 heritage structures in Dwarka identified by the urban management centre (UMC). Results from the analysis highlight that the historic and religious categories came up as two main prominent significance categories with an overlap of architectural and socio-cultural significance. The study highlights that 53% of the listed heritage structures in Dwarka show some signs of deterioration and need repair and proper restoration with proper signage to attract more tourists as well to maintain the historic essence of the city and also to preserve its history.
