A Comparative Seismic Assessment of Structures Utilizing Various Angles: Shear Walls vs. Diagrid Structural Systems

Diksha Ramdas Pagare, Rameshwar A. Thote

Abstract

The diagrid structural system has emerged as a cutting-edge approach to designing tall buildings in recent times. It represents a significant innovation in the construction industry, combining both structural strength and striking architectural aesthetics. The versatility of the diagrid system has led to its widespread adoption in the construction of tall buildings. In-depth research into the design methodology of diagrid structures has unveiled their exceptional structural capabilities and distinctive architectural appeal. This structural system has gained increasing popularity due to its efficiency and the unique geometric configurations it offers. Each storey of a diagrid structure is meticulously designed with diagonals placed at various uniform angles, and in some cases, these angles may gradually change as the building rises in height. This approach aims to determine the optimal angle for each structural component while maintaining a consistent overall height. Additionally, investigating the structural potential of diagrids with changing angles has become a key focus of contemporary architectural and engineering research. In this present study, four different building model of G+35 multi storied building has been modelled with and without shear wall and different diagrid angle structure to compare their performance. The structural design was subjected to a thorough analysis, specifically considering seismic zone II and medium soil conditions in accordance with IS 1893:2016 standards. This analysis was conducted utilizing ETABS software. The fundamental characteristics of the building design remained unchanged, except for the lateral load-resisting system. Through a detailed examination of the analysis outcomes, it was deduced that building models incorporating a combination of shear walls and diagrid structures exhibited superior performance in terms of several critical parameters. These included maximum story displacement, story drift, and the fundamental time period of the structure.
