Abstract

Abstract

Shell and tube heat exchangers are widely used in process industries and refineries owing to ease of manufacturing and versatile operations. The designer always focuses on improvement in performance characteristics of STHX, based on the given heat duty and geometrical constraints. Several researchers and investigators have suggested various methods for performance optimization of shell and tube heat exchangers. In the present work, experimental investigation is performed using helical baffles in a laboratory scale heat exchanger. It is proved that heat transfer coefficient is increased and pressure drop is decreased using helical baffles as compared to segmental baffles. However, cost analysis is needed to be performed so as to suggest the viability of the results.
