Estimation of Ground Water Quality for Impact Assessment of Fluoride Content on Human Being in Bagalkot Taluk of Bagalkot District, Karnataka

S. S. Hangaragi

Abstract

The chemical parameters of groundwater play a significant role in classifying and assessing water quality. The main objective of the present research work is to discuss the major ion chemistry of groundwater of Bagalkot taluk and further investigating the impact of fluoride content on human being by drinking ground water in selected 41 villages and one urban center of Bagalkot taluk. For assessment of water quality collected from the randomly selected 44 samples from bore-wells/hand pumps through field visit to particular villages for assessing fluoride and other physicochemical parameters of the water, and also to assess the clinical symptoms like dental and skeletal fluorosis, joint pains and gastrointestinal diseases and to find out the severity of the disease. It concluded that, it is essential to supply the good quality of water for agriculture and safe drinking water which is less than 1 mg/l fluoride, either by changing the water source to safer one or by adapting suitable de-salinity/de-fluoridation treatment technique to remove fluoride in the existing sources.
