Hydrological Modelling using HEC-HMS: A Case Study on Shivna River Basin, Marathwada Region, Aurangabad, Maharashtra

Khushali S. Patil, R.M. Damgir

Abstract

The work focuses on the hydrological modeling using the HEC-HMS tool of the hydrological
modeling. The HEC-HMS is the physical hydrological based model. For the pre-processing the
ArcGIS tool of hydrology is used for various data processing like fill sink, flow direction and flow
accumulation along with the delineation of the watershed of the Shivna River basin. The Shivna River
basin is located at 20.33° North and 75.19° East on the average elevation of 838 meter and it merge
to the Godavari river at the Jaiakwadi Reservoir. The Shivana River Basin play very important role
for the reservoir planning and can be useful to understand the exact inflow of the river to the
reservoir. The Shivna River is located in the semi-arid region and the rainfall is moderately low
which causes the less surface and subsurface water. Most of the agriculture is depend on the subsurface
water and the growing demand of the water in the river basin is creating the water scarcity in
the Shivna River basin. After pre-processing the data, the map is created using the HEC-Geo HMS
which makes the data suitable to run in HEC-HMS. The results show a good correlation between the
observed and the simulated data using the HEC-HMS.
