Intercomparison of Rainfall Estimates of Probability Distributions for Developing the Intensity-Duration-Frequency Curves

VIVEKANANDAN N, SRISHAILAM C, PATIL R G

Abstract

Determination of short duration rainfall through the developed Intensity-Duration-Frequency (IDF) curve is of utmost importance for planning, design, operation and management of civil and hydraulic structures. For which, extreme value analysis (EVA) of rainfall that consists of fitting probability distributions such as Normal, Log Normal (LN2), Pearson Type-3, Log Pearson Type-3, Extreme Value Type-1 (EV1) and Generalized Extreme Value (GEV) to the annual 1-day maximum rainfall series is carried out. The EVA results are used for developing the IDF curves to determine the short duration rainfall. The adequacy of fitting distributions adopted in IDF analysis is examined through Goodness-of-Fit tests using Anderson-Darling, Chi-square and Kolmogorov-Smirnov, diagnostic test using D-index and fitted curves of the estimated rainfall. The estimated 1-day maximum rainfall by GEV for Afzalpur, EV1 for Aland and LN2 for Kalaburagi are used in developing the IDF curves to derive the short duration rainfall, which are evaluated by using correlation coefficient and root mean squared error. This study presents a study on comparison of rainfall estimates using six distributions for developing the IDF curves of the selected three sites viz., Afzalpur, Aland and Kalaburagi, and the results obtained thereon.
