A Review on Assessment of Groundwater Quality for Irrigation and Domestic Purposes

Abstract

Abstract

Water is the basic need without which life does not exist in the earth. It is well known that major portion of the earth is occupied by water, out of it only few amounts are fresh water and meant for drinking and other purposes like agriculture, industries, etc. Water occurs in the earth in different forms like surface water, groundwater, glaciers and seawater. Among which the groundwater serves the majority of purposes where there are no other sources. The coasts are one such region which solely depends on groundwater for all its needs. The parameters such as total dissolved solids (TDS), pH, electrical conductivity (EC), sodium (Na), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), bicarbonate (HCO3), chloride (Cl) and sulfate (SO4) were analyzed to evaluate the suitability of groundwater for various domestic purposes. The higher concentration of ions such as Na, Ca, Cl and So4 indicates seawater intrusion, mineral dissolution, intense agricultural practices and improper sewage disposal. The level of EC, TDS and hardness in the water samples indicates that maximum of them are suitable for drinking and domestic purposes. The evaluation of various water parameters indicates that majority of water sample are very good to moderately suitable for agriculture. In the present study, detail investigation of groundwater occurs for the suitability of drinking, domestic and irrigation purposes.
