Preliminary Investigation on Steel Slag: Production, Processing and Cementitious Properties
Abstract
Steel slag is glass-like by-product left over from the conversion of iron to steel in a basic oxygen furnace, or from the melting of scrap to make steel in an electric arc furnace. This paper reviews the production, processing, and cementitious properties of steel slag, and its use as a cementing component in different cementing systems. The chemical composition of raw ore and cooling of molten steel slag have a great effect on the physical and chemical properties of solidified steel slag. Present study explores the possibility of partially replacing OPC with steel slag in cement mortar. At the moment, most of the steel slag is being used as loose aggregate for asphalt concrete pavement in many countries. Also encouraging results were obtained by using steel slag as replacement of fine aggregates. However, the use of steel slag as a cementitious component must be given a priority from technical, economical, and environmental point of view. Encouraging results were found when steel slag was used as a replacement of cementitious material.
