Effect of Silica Fume on Compressive Strength of Concrete and its Impact on Structure

Falak Farooque Lone, Shakti Kumar

Abstract

Silica fume is the byproduct which is obtained in ferrosilicon and silicon industry. With the increase in environmental hazardous effect, exploitation of industrial outgrowth and exhaustion of natural resources, the demand of using the byproducts has become a captivating choice to disposal. Silica fume is very active pozzolan, it is used in concrete because of its extreme fine, high SiO2 content and very effective in development and design of high-performance concrete. At the same time silica fume can be use in production of porcelain and to increase durability and intensity. This papers covers the chemical, concrete and physical properties and its reaction mechanism, the effects on concrete properties such as ductility, carbonation, sulphate resistance, modulus, freeze-thaw, durability, permeability, corrosion, creep rate, strength and alkali-aggregate resistance of concrete. It has been observed that silica fume boost compressive strength, abrasion resistance and bond strength and helps from protecting of corrosion. The partial replacement of silica fume and its effects on concrete is adopted using M-35 concrete mix in dissertation. hence we can say that all fumes leads better performance, reduction in cement quantity as well as for sustainability. Silica fume is also called as the micro silica fume is no-hazardous and non-metallic material
