Abstract

Corrosion is essentially an oxidation process, wherein the oxidizing agent itself undergoes reduction due to the influence of corrosion agents like salt, air, or moisture. Metals and their alloys naturally tend to react spontaneously with their surroundings, leading to a detrimental impact on their mechanical and physical properties. This project aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of two different oils, namely neem oil and mahogany oil, as agents to prevent acid corrosion. Mild steel measuring 3 cm × 2.7 cm with a weight of 2.21 g was immersed in 0.1M hydrochloric acid and allowed to stand for 120 minutes. Subsequently, it was retrieved, dried, cleaned with distilled water, and weighed for luster. A quantity of 1.00 ml of each oil was applied to the polished surface, and the experiment was repeated. The research revealed that there was a minimized weight loss of the oils within the range of 0.01–0.02. All the oils exhibited inhibitor characteristics against chemical corrosion.
