Performance Optimisation of Counter-Directional Orange Peeling Machine
Abstract
The machine was designed to comprise components including frame, cutting tool/post, jaws, clamp, compression and lock, which were assembled together after fabrication. The machine is clampable on the flat surface. The machine can hold an orange centrally with the aid of two jaws located at both ends of the machine. The cutting tool has a curve like profile and helps in ensuring the cutting tool follows the orange counter-directional as it rotates. A compression spring is incorporated on the cutting tool which brings about the efficient peeling of the orange. The machine has a return mechanism for the jaw so as to ensure easy removal of the orange. The machine was tested using oranges of different sizes and an efficient peeling of 72.27% was achieved. The design has provided enablement for mass peeling of oranges which was difficult to achieve by using traditional or manual method.Orange; peeling; cutting tool; design; counter-directional; manual; automation; efficiency; return mechanism; flexibility
