Investigation of Surface Finish and Vibration in Gear Hobbing

Soumen Das, Pabir Kumar Ghosh, Pradip Kumar Pal, Nabendu Ghosh

Gear hobbing is important machining process. The process parameters are expected to influence
surface finish in gear hobbing. Depending upon service requirements, the materials of the gear may
be of different types. A desired level of surface finish and accuracy of gear tooth is needed
irrespective of the material of the gear, depending upon type of applications of the gear. The change
in process parameters may influence both the vibration and surface finish in hobbing and the extent of
this influence may be different depending upon the type of gear material. Keeping these aspects under
consideration, the present work has been planned to investigate vibration and surface finish in gear
hobbing of cast iron. The process parameter varied in the present work is mainly, axial feed.
However, during the study of idle-run vibration hob speed has been varied. Four levels of feed have
been used in the study and effect of this variation on dynamic performance of the gear hobbing
machine has been investigated. Vibration signals have been recorded in three different directions, at
the bearing housings of the hob arbor. The objective of the present work is therefore, to analyze the
effect of axial feed on dynamic characteristics of the gear hobbing machine while cutting gear tooth
of cast iron. The scope in the present work has been extended to study the effect of axial feed on
surface finish of the gear tooth of cast iron materials. The experimental data have been interpreted
through graphical plots and discussions in the three different directions and axial feed.
