Feasibility Studies of Engineering Properties of Coarse Aggregates from Demolition Waste and Natural Aggregates for Road Construction

Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste constitutes a major portion of total solid waste origination in the world and most of it is used in landfills. The disposal of this construction and demolition waste is becoming a major concern as it is disposed unscientifically in India. The C&D waste is usually dumped on the sides of canals, minor roads and at the entrance of the cities and towns. This causes environmental problems and affects the quality of life of people. This paper discusses the possibility of replacing natural coarse aggregate with recycled concrete from demolition waste aggregate for road construction. Aggregate strength, gradation, absorption, specific gravity, shape and texture are some of the engineering properties that are desirable for road construction. Therefore, the experimental program was focused on the evaluation of engineering properties of the recycled aggregate over a period of 6 months. The findings from the study showed that the recycled concrete aggregate can be used for construction of transportation infrastructure. However, further research is needed particularly on the long term field performance of the recycled aggregate concrete before it can be used with confidence.
